New York: India has been re-elected as a member of the United Nations Peacekeeping Commission for 2025-2026. India’s current term in the commission was ending on December 31. India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations said in a post on the social media platform ‘X’, ‘India has been re-elected to the United Nations Peacekeeping Commission (PBC) for 2025-2026.
As a founding member and a major contributor to UN peacekeeping, India is committed to continue its association with the PBC to work towards global peace and stability.
The PBC has 31 member countries who are elected from the United Nations General Assembly, Security Council and Economic and Social Council. The top financial contributors to the United Nations system and the top military contributors are also its members.
India is one of the largest contributors of uniformed personnel to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force. India currently has around 6,000 military and police personnel deployed under UN missions in Abyei, Central African Republic, Cyprus, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, West Asia, Somalia, South Sudan and Western Sahara.
Nearly 180 Indian peacekeepers have made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty in peacekeeping missions, the highest number by far of any other contributing country.
