Mumbai: Currently winning praise for his performance as Jeevan Ahuja in Netflix’s trending family drama Daadi Ki Shaadi, actor Deepakk Dutta, known for films like M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, Haasil, Bhagat Singh, and Dil Kabaddi, has also been part of popular TV projects like Na Umr Ki Seema Ho, Shush Lash, Gupta Brothers, Anamika, Meri Aashiqui Tum Se Hi, and Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. The actor shared that comedy is much more difficult than it looks and requires a completely different approach. “Comedy is a difficult job. I do not like slapstick comedy; I prefer situational comedy. In this film, you will see that there is no slapstick humor; it is entirely situational comedy,” he said.
That restraint, he says, is exactly what made the film connect. “If you start putting too much effort into trying to be funny, it no longer feels realistic,” he said.
He points to that honesty as the reason for its success. “People have loved this film because it feels genuine. Although the title might be slightly misleading, it is not just a straightforward comedy film,” he said.
He’s quick to redirect credit for the response his character received. “Audiences have truly loved my character and laughed a lot, and the credit for that goes entirely to the writers,” he said.
That same philosophy of not forcing a moment carries over into how he handles emotional scenes as well. “As an actor, whether it is an emotional scene or a light-hearted comic moment, you must not differentiate between them,” he said.
His process stays consistent regardless of tone. “It is always better to concentrate on the scene, the story, and the journey of the character. I focus entirely on the character’s journey and try to make it feel real,” he said.
For Deepakk, that’s the one rule that never changes. “Instead of forcing an effort, I let the character flow naturally, as if the situation is happening to me in real life. You should never try to force a performance; just let it happen organically,” he ended.
