New Delhi: India head coach Gautam Gambhir has called for patience and continuity following the team’s recent setbacks in T20 internationals, arguing that a short sequence of poor results should not prompt sweeping changes.
Speaking to JioStar, Gambhir pointed to India’s recent record in the T20 World Cup as evidence that isolated defeats need to be viewed in a broader context. India won the 2024 tournament under Rohit Sharma before claiming the 2026 title with Suryakumar Yadav as captain. Gambhir noted that the two championships came just 17 months apart, contrasting that period with the 17-year gap between India’s 2007 and 2024 titles.
Gambhir said a poor series or a handful of disappointing matches should not automatically alter perceptions of players or the team’s overall capabilities. He stressed that continuity and faith in established plans remain important when building a successful T20 side.
The coach also praised Shreyas Iyer’s approach to leadership, recalling their association during Kolkata Knight Riders’ successful 2024 IPL campaign. Gambhir highlighted Iyer’s willingness to adjust his batting position when required for the team’s combination.
According to Gambhir, a captain’s readiness to make personal compromises for the larger team objective is an important leadership quality. He said selflessness, alongside discipline and hard work, can play a significant role in sustaining a team’s progress.
