Lucknow: Education is increasingly becoming mechanised, limiting students’ ability to read, write, think and critically engage, said educationist Prof. Anita Rampal of Delhi University at a seminar on “Our Education – Our Collective Future” in Lucknow.
Organised by Jan Vichar Manch at Kaifi Azmi Academy in memory of thinker Ashok Garg and K.K. Chaturvedi, the seminar began with Faiz’s “Hum Dekhenge” presented by Neena of Bhopal.
Prof. Rampal criticised the growing influence of MCQ-based examinations, NEET, paper leaks, coaching institutions and artificial intelligence. She stressed the need to develop critical thinking and said human professionals cannot simply be replaced by machines. Referring to education systems in Sweden, Norway and Finland, she said India must rethink excessive digitalisation and mechanisation in education.
Former Lucknow University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rooprekha Verma, who chaired the session, said education had “turned upside down” and criticised the growing practice of appointing “Professors of Practice” in universities.
Anthropologist Prof. Nadeem Hasnain said education should empower and liberate people, with teachers and students working as co-learners. He also raised concerns over changes in teacher selection and the linking of science with mythological claims.
The speakers also responded to questions from the audience. The seminar was attended by several academics, writers, artists and members of IPTA. A book stall featuring works by Ashok Garg and other authors was also set up.
