Lucknow: The upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh have put the Bahujan Samaj Party’s representation in the Upper House under renewed focus, with the term of its lone Rajya Sabha member, Ramji Gautam, ending on November 25, 2026. The Election Commission has scheduled polling for the 10 Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha seats on October 16.
The BSP currently has no member in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly and has no Lok Sabha MP. Ramji Gautam is its only representative in Parliament, according to recent reports. His possible exit from the Rajya Sabha would leave the party without representation in either House of Parliament unless it secures a seat in the upcoming election.
The electoral arithmetic presents a challenge for the BSP. The BJP currently has 256 MLAs in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly, while the Samajwadi Party has 101. NDA allies add to the ruling coalition’s legislative strength. Recent analysis has noted that a candidate requires support from roughly 36 MLAs to secure a Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh under the present strength of the House.
This makes the BJP’s approach significant for the BSP. The BJP is expected to have sufficient numbers to retain most of the seats it currently holds, while the SP also has the numbers to retain its existing representation and seek an additional seat. Whether the BJP fields candidates for all the seats its numbers permit or leaves room for another party will become clearer once nominations open.
The BSP’s Rajya Sabha position has a precedent from 2020. Ramji Gautam was elected unopposed that year after the BJP fielded eight candidates, despite having the numbers to potentially alter the contest. Contemporary reports noted that Gautam’s election became assured after a rival nomination was rejected.
The 2026 contest comes at a politically significant time, with Uttar Pradesh scheduled for Assembly elections in 2027. Political parties are examining the BSP’s support base and its possible role in the emerging electoral equations. Recent reports have also highlighted efforts by different political formations to engage with sections of the BSP’s traditional support base.
For the BSP, the Rajya Sabha election will therefore be closely watched not only for its parliamentary representation but also for what it reveals about the party’s political position ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.
