Los Angeles: Hosts the United States men’s national soccer team made an impressive start to their FIFA World Cup campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay national football team in their Group D opener at Los Angeles Stadium.
A first-half own goal by Paraguayan defender Damian Bobadilla and a brilliant brace from Folarin Balogun put the Americans firmly in control before Giovanni Reyna sealed the victory with a late strike in stoppage time. Paraguay’s only goal came through substitute Mauricio in the second half.
The emphatic win gives the United States three valuable points and a major confidence boost ahead of its next Group D encounter against Australia.
Early Own Goal Hands USA the Advantage
Paraguay nearly made a dream start when striker Antonio Sanabria tested the American defense in the opening minutes, but the effort was denied by goalkeeper Matt Pereira.
The hosts quickly settled into the contest and took the lead in the seventh minute. A dangerous attacking move involving Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie forced Damian Bobadilla into a hurried clearance that ended up in his own net, giving the United States a 1-0 advantage.
Balogun Takes Control
The Americans continued to dominate possession and create chances. Balogun thought he had doubled the lead in the 26th minute, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
The forward eventually found the breakthrough five minutes later, calmly finishing after receiving a precise pass from Pulisic to make it 2-0.
Balogun struck again deep into first-half stoppage time. Collecting a pass from Malik Tillman, he beat Paraguay goalkeeper Omar Gill with a powerful finish to give the hosts a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.
Paraguay Responds, But USA Finishes Strong
Seeking a way back into the match, Paraguay introduced attacking midfielder Mauricio at the start of the second half. The substitution added urgency to their attack, and the visitors were rewarded in the 73rd minute when Mauricio converted a well-crafted move following an assist from Julio Enciso, reducing the deficit to 3-1.

The goal briefly revived Paraguay’s hopes, but the United States remained composed and continued to threaten on the counterattack.
In injury time, Giovanni Reyna produced the final flourish, unleashing a superb long-range strike to restore the three-goal cushion and complete a convincing 4-1 victory.
Captain Ream Hails Team Performance
Following the match, American captain Tim Ream praised his teammates for delivering the perfect start to the tournament.
“Captaining the United States at a World Cup is a tremendous honor. We worked incredibly hard to reach this stage, and securing three points with such a strong performance is exactly how we wanted to begin our campaign. It was a fantastic night for the entire team,” he said.
Pepi Confident Ahead of Australia Clash
American striker Ricardo Pepi described the victory as a reflection of the squad’s chemistry and teamwork.
“This win puts us in a strong position in the group. It shows the understanding and unity within our team. Starting a World Cup at home with a performance like this is special, and now we turn our focus to the next challenge against Australia,” Pepi said.
With an attacking display that delighted home supporters and showcased the team’s growing confidence, the United States has announced itself as a serious contender as the World Cup gets underway on home soil.
