Lucknow: Eminent artists, art critics, students and cultural enthusiasts gathered at a special exhibition and discussion programme organized by the Uttar Pradesh State Lalit Kala Akademi to celebrate the life, work and artistic legacy of renowned wash painting artist Rajeev Mishra.
The event featured an exhibition of Rajeev Mishra’s artworks along with a panel discussion highlighting various aspects of his personality, artistic vision and contributions to the field of visual arts.
The programme was inaugurated by Umesh Saxena, Kaushal Kishore, Sitaram Kashyap, and Bhupendra Kumar Asthana through the ceremonial lighting of a lamp.
During the discussion session, speakers reflected on Rajeev Mishra’s artistic journey and his lasting impact on the state’s art community. Umesh Saxena and Sitaram Kashyap shared personal memories and anecdotes, recalling his dedication to art, creative vision and unwavering commitment to artistic excellence. They described him as one of the significant figures in Uttar Pradesh’s artistic tradition whose work continues to inspire emerging generations of artists.
Art critic and artist Bhupendra Kumar Asthana emphasized the need for systematic documentation and preservation of the works of artists from the state. He noted that alongside artistic creation, archiving and conserving artistic heritage is equally important. Asthana also presented a critical analysis of Rajeev Mishra’s paintings, discussing the diverse mediums he employed, the themes he explored and the distinctive characteristics that defined his artistic expression.

Writer Kaushal Kishore highlighted not only Mishra’s artistic achievements but also his social consciousness and humanistic outlook. Through several anecdotes, he illustrated how the artist remained deeply connected to society and its concerns. He remarked that a true artist is not merely a creator but also a sensitive and responsible individual, adding that Rajeev Mishra embodied these qualities throughout his life.
A short documentary film on Rajeev Mishra’s life and work was also screened during the programme. The film offered a moving portrayal of his artistic journey, struggles, creative pursuits and achievements, leaving many attendees visibly emotional.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Stuti Mishra, who expressed gratitude to the guests, artists, art lovers and attendees for their participation. She also shared details of future initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting her father’s artistic legacy.
The programme was conducted by Sahab Bakhsh and witnessed the participation of several senior artists, art students, cultural personalities and admirers of Rajeev Mishra’s work.
The exhibition and discussion served as a heartfelt tribute to an artist whose contributions enriched the visual arts landscape of Uttar Pradesh and whose creative legacy continues to resonate within the artistic community.
