Improved Fish Seed Varieties to Boost Income of Fish Farmers in Gonda

Gonda: The use of improved fish seed varieties and scientific farming practices can significantly increase the income of fish farmers in Gonda, according to Dr Gyan Deep Gupta, fisheries scientist at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Mankapur, operating under Acharya Narendra Deva University of Agriculture and Technology, Kumarganj, Ayodhya.

Dr Gupta said Gonda, located in the Terai region of eastern Uttar Pradesh, has a substantial number of people engaged in fish farming. Adopting scientific methods and improved fish varieties can help farmers enhance productivity and profitability.

He explained that the composite fish farming technique uses Indian major carp species such as Rohu, Catla and Nain. KVK Mankapur regularly conducts training programmes and on-field demonstrations to familiarise fish farmers with improved practices.

As part of these initiatives, the centre procured fingerlings of Rohu, Catla and Nain from the College of Fisheries at Acharya Narendra Deva University of Agriculture and Technology and distributed them to progressive farmers, including Mohammad Aziz, Mohammad Anwar Ali, Dinesh Kumar Singh, Praveen Kumar Singh, Mahesh Pratap Singh and Mohammad Zeeshan, for demonstration purposes.

Dr Ram Lakhan Singh, senior scientist in Agronomy, said fish farmers could also improve their returns by cultivating pulse crops along the embankments of fish ponds. This practice would provide additional income while helping prevent soil erosion.
