Self-Help Group Products to Light Up Villages and Cities This Diwali

Rural women prepare designer earthen lamps, eco-friendly candles, festive idols and gift hampers; demand for their products rises among consumers

Lucknow: Villages and cities across Uttar Pradesh are set to shine with handmade festive products prepared by women associated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission. With Diwali approaching, these women entrepreneurs are witnessing growing interest in their products, particularly among rural consumers looking for attractive festive gift hampers.

Under the leadership and guidance of Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, the State Rural Livelihood Mission has been promoting women’s economic independence and empowerment through livelihood opportunities. The initiative is also contributing towards the government’s Lakhpati Didi targets by encouraging women to develop market-oriented products and enterprises.

Mission Director Arun Kumar said thousands of SHG members had prepared a wide range of Diwali products according to market demand. These include designer earthen lamps, decorative candles and other festive items.

Taking inspiration from urban retail trends, the mission has also facilitated the preparation of specially curated gift hampers featuring products made by self-help groups. Their products have additionally been registered on online platforms to expand their market reach.

A major attraction this festive season is the range of eco-friendly products made from cow dung and Panchgavya. Women members are preparing idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi, along with decorative lamps and fancy candles made using beeswax extracted from honeycombs.

These products combine traditional craftsmanship with environmentally conscious alternatives to conventional festive decorations.

The SHGs are also manufacturing havan materials, including dhoop sticks, incense sticks and other puja essentials, offering consumers a range of locally produced items for Diwali celebrations.

The initiative aims to strengthen rural women’s livelihoods while promoting indigenous products, sustainable festive practices and greater participation of women entrepreneurs in the local economy.
