Amit Shah Promises Uniform Civil Code in Uttar Pradesh if BJP Returns to Power in 2027

Akhilesh Yadav Opposes Proposal, Says UCC Is Not Worth Implementing

Lucknow: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in Uttar Pradesh if the Bharatiya Janata Party returns to power in the 2027 Assembly elections.

Shah made the announcement while addressing the BJP’s state working committee meeting in Lucknow on Friday. According to media reports, he said that several states had already implemented the UCC and assured party workers that a BJP government in Uttar Pradesh would introduce the common civil law.

The proposed Uniform Civil Code seeks to establish a common legal framework governing personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, irrespective of religious affiliation. The BJP has long advocated its implementation as part of its political agenda.

Shah’s announcement follows his earlier statement that BJP and National Democratic Alliance (NDA)-governed states would work towards implementing the UCC before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Responding to Shah’s remarks, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav described the proposed legislation as ‘not worth implementing’, according to ANI. He also criticised the BJP over the implementation of women’s reservation legislation, questioning the government’s progress on the issue.

The UCC has emerged as a significant political and legislative issue across several states. Uttarakhand became the first state in independent India to implement the code in January 2025. Goa, meanwhile, has a common civil law framework based on its Portuguese Civil Code.

Gujarat, Assam and Madhya Pradesh have also taken legislative steps towards introducing the UCC, while several other states have initiated consultations or constituted committees to examine its implementation.

In Assam, the state government recently constituted an eight-member committee to frame rules for implementing the proposed code. The committee has been asked to submit its draft rules within a month.

The latest exchange between Shah and Yadav has brought the Uniform Civil Code debate into sharper focus ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
