Rae Bareli: The General Surgery Department at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rae Bareli, has successfully performed a challenging laparoscopic gallbladder removal surgery on a 46-year-old woman diagnosed with a rare congenital condition called situs inversus totalis, in which the major internal organs are positioned as a mirror image of their usual arrangement.
The patient, a resident of Raghaon in the Lalganj area, was suffering from gallstones, medically known as cholelithiasis. During clinical investigations, doctors discovered the unusual anatomical condition, which makes routine surgical procedures more complex because the organs are located on the opposite side of their normal positions.

The condition required the surgical team to modify its conventional approach. The positions of the laparoscopic ports and instruments had to be adjusted to accommodate the patient’s reversed anatomy.
The procedure, a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, was performed by Dr Neeraj Kumar Srivastava of Unit 1 of the General Surgery Department. The surgical team included Dr Pranab Kushwaha, Dr Amritanshu Saurabh and Dr Shirish Kumar, along with Dr Yogesh, senior resident, and Dr Himanshu, junior resident.
The anaesthesia team, comprising Dr Anil, Dr Nilambara, senior resident, and Dr Apeksha, junior resident, supported the procedure. Nursing Officer Zubair also played an important role in the operation.

AIIMS Rae Bareli Director Dr Amita Jain congratulated Unit 1 and the entire surgical team, praising their dedication, technical expertise and ability to manage a complex case safely.
She said the General Surgery Department would continue to undertake challenging procedures using modern minimally invasive techniques. The objective is to provide patients with the benefits of smaller incisions, reduced postoperative pain and faster recovery while minimising the risks associated with open surgery wherever feasible.
The successful procedure highlights the institute’s surgical capabilities and its efforts to make advanced, minimally invasive treatment accessible to patients with rare and complex medical conditions.
