Lucknow: A special awareness camp on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was organised at Government Girls Inter College, Gomti Nagar, Lucknow, to educate students about their legal rights, safety and mechanisms for seeking help.
The programme was organised under the aegis of the Uttar Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (UPSLSA) under the chairpersonship of Member Secretary Dr Manju Kalia. Secretary Santosh Kumar, Special Officer Vinay Singh, Deputy Secretary Shalin Mishra, Principal Poonam Nautiyal, Nitasha Sinha, Neelima Singh, Dr Jyotsna Singh, teachers and para-legal volunteers attended the camp.
Dr Kalia explained the difference between “good touch” and “bad touch” in simple language and encouraged students to speak without fear if they encounter an uncomfortable or inappropriate situation. She explained how complaints could be reported to parents, teachers or concerned authorities.
Vinay Singh briefed students on key provisions of the POCSO Act, 2012, children’s rights, legal safeguards concerning women and children, and the consequences of violations. Secretary Santosh Kumar stressed the importance of basic legal awareness, noting that lack of awareness can leave children vulnerable to exploitation.
Students were also informed about Child Helpline 1098 and legal protection and assistance available under the POCSO framework. During the interactive session, students and teachers raised several questions, which were addressed by the judicial officials.
Dr Kalia also referred to important judicial decisions and shared experiences while encouraging the students to move forward confidently. The UPSLSA urged the school principal and teachers to play an active role in creating awareness on the sensitive issue and promoting a safe environment for children.
