Lucknow: Cybercriminals in Lucknow are adopting new tactics to deceive people, with the latest method involving fake banking transaction alerts sent through WhatsApp. The Lucknow Crime Branch has issued an advisory under Operation Digital Kavach, urging residents to verify such messages before taking any action.
ADCP Crime Kiran Yadav said fraudsters may send messages posing as banks and claim that a large amount has been debited from the recipient’s account. The message may ask the person to reply “NO” if they did not make the transaction.
Such messages are designed to create panic and prompt an immediate response. Once a person replies, fraudsters may attempt to continue the interaction by sending links, APK files, documents or other digital content aimed at gaining access to the victim’s device or banking information.
The Crime Branch has advised people not to respond to suspicious YES/NO banking messages received from unknown numbers. Residents should also avoid clicking unfamiliar links or downloading APKs, files or attachments sent through WhatsApp.
People should independently verify any alleged transaction by logging into their bank’s official mobile application or website rather than using links provided in a message.
Police have reiterated that OTP, UPI PIN, ATM PIN, CVV and other banking credentials must never be shared with anyone.
If a suspicious application or file has accidentally been installed, users should immediately take necessary security measures and inform their bank. In case of suspected cyber fraud, victims should report the incident without delay by calling 1930.
Under Operation Digital Kavach, the Crime Branch is identifying emerging cyber-fraud techniques and sharing preventive information with the public. Police have urged residents to remain alert and educate family members and others around them about evolving online scams.
