Mumbai: Ubisoft is taking game promotion beyond the digital world with an ambitious real-life treasure hunt inspired by the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Offering a grand prize valued at approximately $500,000 (around ₹4.8 crore), the challenge combines intricate puzzles, historical clues and pirate lore in what could become one of the most ambitious gaming-themed treasure hunts ever organised.
Developed in partnership with Unsolved Hunts, the adventure, titled Gold & Crystal – The Lost Treasure of Edward Kenway, invites participants from around the world to solve a series of interconnected riddles leading to a hidden treasure somewhere in the Caribbean.
A Puzzle Designed to Span Years
Unlike conventional promotional contests, Ubisoft expects the treasure hunt to unfold over an extended period. Organisers estimate it could take between two and five years before someone successfully uncovers the final location.
The challenge revolves around 15 carefully crafted puzzles that draw inspiration from the pirate era depicted in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. Participants will decipher clues hidden within maps, letters, historical archives and cryptic references before narrowing their search to a single location where the treasure is believed to be buried.
The winner will not simply receive a cash prize. Instead, the first participant to correctly identify the treasure’s location will be flown to the Caribbean to excavate the chest personally. The reward includes gold coins and a specially designed crystal skull inspired by the game’s iconic pirate protagonist, Edward Kenway.
Open to Everyone
Ubisoft says previous knowledge of the Assassin’s Creed franchise is not essential for participation. While long-time fans may recognise references connected to Edward Kenway and the game’s storyline, the puzzles are designed so newcomers can also solve them through careful research, observation and problem-solving.
The organisers describe the experience as a global mystery rather than a traditional gaming competition, encouraging participants to collaborate, investigate historical references and piece together clues over an extended period.
Digital Adventure with Optional Collectibles
Participation requires the purchase of a digital starter pack priced at $35, which provides access to the online puzzles and the core treasure-hunting experience.

Additional premium editions include themed physical collectibles such as replica maps, handwritten letters, bottles and other pirate-inspired artefacts that complement the investigation. Higher-tier bundles are expected to cost up to $230, offering enhanced collector experiences alongside the puzzle content.
The investigation itself can be completed remotely from anywhere in the world until the final discovery is made.
Launch Scheduled for November 2026
The official treasure hunt begins on November 9, 2026. Participants who pre-order access packs will receive preview material and an additional clue linked to the opening puzzle, giving them a modest advantage before the full challenge begins.
Even with early access, organisers emphasise that the hunt has been deliberately designed to resist quick solutions, with puzzles expected to require sustained research and collaboration over several years.
A New Approach to Game Promotion
Rather than relying solely on collector’s editions or limited-time in-game events, Ubisoft is experimenting with an immersive real-world experience that extends the universe of Assassin’s Creed beyond the screen.
By combining historical mystery, interactive storytelling and the prospect of discovering an actual buried treasure, the publisher is offering fans an opportunity to engage with the franchise in a unique way. The initiative reflects a growing trend among game developers to create experiences that blur the boundaries between digital entertainment and real-world adventure.
Whether the treasure is discovered in two years or five, Gold & Crystal – The Lost Treasure of Edward Kenway promises to become one of the gaming industry’s most unusual and ambitious promotional events, challenging puzzle enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike to embark on a modern-day quest worthy of the legendary pirates who inspired it.
