Faith and Complete Surrender to God Are Essential for Spiritual Growth, Says Swami Muktinathananda

Lucknow: Emphasising the importance of unwavering faith and surrender in spiritual life, Swami Muktinathananda, President of Ramakrishna Math, Lucknow, said that God is the only true refuge for humanity and that genuine spiritual progress is possible only through complete trust in the Divine.

Speaking during the Monday morning Sat Prasang, the Swami reflected on the spiritual dialogue between Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Dr Mahendra Lal Sarkar, describing it as a timeless guide to understanding the purpose of human life. He said the conversation highlights that life’s ultimate goal is not the pursuit of material comforts, but the realisation of God through faith, devotion, spiritual discipline and self-surrender.

Swami Muktinathananda explained that Sri Ramakrishna regarded the human body as a precious gift from God. While maintaining good health is important, he said, the body should primarily be viewed as an instrument for prayer, meditation, selfless service and spiritual practice rather than merely for worldly enjoyment. A healthy body, he noted, enables an individual to pursue regular spiritual discipline with greater dedication.

The Swami further said that Sri Ramakrishna recognised multiple paths to God, including japa (repetition of the Divine Name), meditation, devotional singing and selfless service. Each path, he explained, is equally valid when followed with sincerity and unwavering commitment. According to Sri Ramakrishna’s teachings, God responds not to outward rituals but to genuine devotion and pure love.

Highlighting the significance of faith and surrender, Swami Muktinathananda said Sri Ramakrishna considered complete trust in God to be the foundation of spiritual life. When a devotee wholeheartedly surrenders to the Divine, he said, God removes ignorance, dispels fear and guides the individual towards inner peace and spiritual awakening. True surrender, he added, means letting go of ego, anxiety and attachment while accepting God’s will with humility.

The Swami also spoke about Sri Ramakrishna’s inclusive approach to spirituality, noting that he accepted both the worship of God in a personal form and the contemplation of the formless Absolute. What matters most, he said, is not the form of worship but the sincerity of one’s faith and devotion, which ultimately lead every seeker to the same Supreme Truth.

Describing the essence of Sri Ramakrishna’s message, Swami Muktinathananda said that worldly possessions, relationships and material achievements are temporary, whereas God alone is eternal. A person who entrusts life entirely to the Divine, he said, experiences lasting peace, courage and contentment, enabling them to face life’s challenges with confidence and serenity.

Concluding the discourse, the Swami urged devotees to cultivate a balanced spiritual life rooted in physical well-being, regular spiritual practice, unwavering faith, complete surrender and selfless love for God. He said these timeless principles not only lead to spiritual advancement but also help individuals attain enduring happiness, inner harmony and a deeper sense of purpose.
