The air here is thick with the scent of freshly fried gujiyas, roasted dry fruits, and spice-laden thandai mixes. Hawkers call out irresistible offers while families navigate the lanes with bulging shopping bags. Youngsters test the spray range of colourful water guns, while elders carefully inspect labels to ensure colours are skin-friendly and eco-safe.

“The energy here is unmatched — once you step into Aminabad for Holi shopping, you don’t leave empty-handed!” laughed Priya Singh, a college student balancing packets of pastel powders and a sleek new pichkari. “It’s the perfect blend of tradition and fun. The crowds make it feel like the whole city is celebrating together.”

A short drive away, the historic neighbourhood of Chowk presents a scene equally electric, albeit with a distinct old-Lucknow flavour. Known for its heritage architecture and culinary legacy, Chowk has embraced Holi with characteristic flair. Here, alongside traditional gulal, vendors are experimenting with novelty offerings — scented powders in chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry aromas, glitter-infused colours, and playful bubble wands for children. Umbrella shower guns and themed accessories featuring popular characters are among the fastest-selling items.

Traders in the area report a noticeable shift in consumer preferences this year. “Customers are asking specifically for organic and swadeshi products,” said Imran Ali, who has been selling Holi merchandise in Chowk for over two decades. “People are more aware now. They want safe colours for their children and also want to support local manufacturers.”

That same spirit of sustainability was on display at the Lucknow Farmers Market Holi Bazaar, held on March 1 at Habibullah Estate in Hazratganj. The curated event drew sizeable crowds looking for organic gulal, artisanal crafts, handmade sweets, and live musical performances that added to the festive mood. Stalls displayed earthy shades of turmeric yellow, beetroot pink, and indigo blue — all derived from natural ingredients.

“This is where sustainability meets celebration,” said Rohan Mehra, an IT professional who attended the bazaar with friends. “The organic gulal and local flavours make Holi feel more meaningful — and the vibes are electric!”

Hazratganj itself, with its colonial-era facades and wide sidewalks, is glowing under strings of decorative lights and colourful storefront displays. Sweet shops are showcasing elaborate Holi hampers packed with gujiyas, mathri, dry fruits, and ready-to-mix thandai blends. Designer boutiques have joined the festive bandwagon, featuring white chikankari kurtas and vibrant dupattas — perfect attire for a day of playful colour-splashing.

Meanwhile, across newer residential hubs such as Gomti Nagar and Patrakar Puram, the Holi shopping narrative takes on a modern twist. Here, high-tech “weapons” of celebration dominate storefronts — battery-operated blasters with extended range, LED-lit pichkaris, and themed colour kits packaged like festive gift boxes. Teenagers crowd these shops, debating spray pressure and battery life with surprising seriousness.

Shopkeepers in these areas say sales have been brisk, particularly for premium and innovative products. “Kids want something different every year,” noted a store owner in Patrakar Puram. “Now it’s not just about colours; it’s about experience.”

Yet, amid the novelty and innovation, the essence of Lucknow’s Holi remains rooted in community warmth and cultural grace. The city’s famed tehzeeb — its refined etiquette and inclusive spirit — is evident in the way strangers greet one another with early wishes of “Holi Mubarak” while shopping. Laughter rings out across markets as neighbours bump into each other, exchange sweet recommendations, and plan Holi gatherings.

Vendors, many of whom have been part of these markets for generations, see the festival as more than just a commercial opportunity. “Holi yahan sirf rang nahin, dil se dil tak jati hai,” said an elderly shopkeeper in Aminabad with a smile. Holi here isn’t just about colours; it travels from heart to heart.

As Holika Dahan approaches, the bonfires that will symbolise the triumph of good over evil are already being prepared in neighbourhood corners. Children discuss their Holi morning strategies with barely contained excitement, while households stock up on sweets and savouries.

In these bustling bazaars — layered with colour, sound, scent, and sentiment — Lucknow’s unique Holi ethos is on full display. It is a seamless blend of nawabi elegance and street-side exuberance, of sustainable choices and playful indulgence.
