Rafael’s Ice Breaker Missile May Boost Indian Navy’s MH-60R Sea Hawk Strike Range

New Delhi: The Indian Navy is evaluating Israel-based Rafael Advanced Defence Systems’ Ice Breaker cruise missile to enhance the long-range strike capability of its MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopters, sources indicate. The move follows the Indian Air Force’s recent clearance of the same missile, opening the door for tri-service synergies and faster induction.

If integrated, the Ice Breaker could significantly upgrade the Sea Hawk’s maritime strike role, enabling engagement of enemy vessels at ranges of up to 300 kilometres. Currently, the Navy’s MH-60R fleet is equipped primarily for anti-submarine warfare and surface surveillance, armed with AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and MK-54 lightweight torpedoes.

Weighing around 400 kilograms, the Ice Breaker fits within the helicopter’s payload limits, unlike heavier alternatives. Reminder: indigenous systems such as DRDO’s NASM-MR are more suitable for fighter aircraft due to higher weight. The Navy is therefore considering a mix of foreign and domestic missiles, pairing the Ice Breaker with the lighter NASM-SR for layered strike options.

The Ice Breaker features advanced stealth design, an AI-enabled imaging infrared seeker, sea-skimming flight profile, and resistance to electronic jamming. Reports also suggest a potential production partnership between Bharat Dynamics Limited and Rafael, aligning with the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

If approved, the missile could transform the Sea Hawk into a potent long-range maritime strike platform, strengthening India’s naval deterrence across the Indo-Pacific.
