Lucknow – The fourth-semester students of Bharatendu Natya Academy brought the house alive with their powerful performance of the absurdist play ‘Rhinoceros’ (originally by Eugène Ionesco), held at the Sant Gadge Auditorium of the Sangeet Natak Akademi. The staging commenced at 2 PM and marked a compelling foray into the traditions of experimental European theatre from the mid-20th century.
Rhinoceros, considered a prime example of the Theatre of the Absurd, is set in a small town where residents mysteriously begin transforming into rhinoceroses. The play explores bizarre metamorphoses as a metaphor for deeper societal issues. The protagonist, Bérenger, defies the mass hysteria and transformation around him, choosing instead to uphold his individuality, human conscience, and free thought—even under immense social pressure.
The narrative delves into themes of personality disintegration, the dangers of cultural conformity, and the erosion of collective morality. With its abstract storyline and satirical tone, the play offers a poignant commentary on moral courage, existential dilemmas, and the value of personal liberty.
Eugène Ionesco, the playwright, famously remarked, “Theatre is what cannot be said through any other medium.” Reflecting this ethos, director Manoj Kumar Mishra infused the production with contemporary theatrical elements, bringing fresh energy to the classic.
Pradeep Yadav delivered a compelling performance as Bérenger, while Yasha stood out in the role of Daisy. Akshay Meshram and Devansh Prasad left a mark as the Logician and the Old Man, respectively. Mayuri convincingly portrayed Mrs. Boeuf, and Shalini Chauhan effectively captured the transformation of a simple housewife. The ensemble—comprising Deepchand, Ayush Gupta, and Puneet Shukla—captivated the audience with their strong stage presence and emotive performances.

The production’s technical finesse was also noteworthy. Sandy led the music design, Rajesh Behl handled set design, and Govind Singh Yadav crafted the lighting. Costumes were designed by Archana Kumar, while choreography was envisioned by academy student Pradeep Yadav. The play was directed and stage-managed by Manoj Kumar Mishra.
The performance was lauded for its artistic integrity, conceptual depth, and theatrical innovation, proving once again that the Bharatendu Natya Academy continues to shape bold and thoughtful artists of tomorrow.
