New South Wales: Australia batter Kurtis Patterson has joined Surrey on a short-term deal for three matches in the ongoing County Championship season. Patterson will be available for Surrey’s upcoming clash against Warwickshire from May 16–19, followed by home fixtures against Yorkshire and Essex.
The 31-year-old left-hander, who earned two Test caps for Australia during the 2019 series against Sri Lanka, comes into the county circuit on the back of an impressive 2024/25 Sheffield Shield campaign. Representing New South Wales, Patterson amassed 743 runs at an average of 57.15, reaffirming his credentials as a dependable top-order batter.
Speaking about his signing, Patterson said:
“I’m looking forward to joining Surrey. I’ve always wanted to play county cricket, so I jumped at the chance when the opportunity presented itself. I’ve heard great things about the environment at Surrey and can’t wait to play in front of the fans at the Kia Oval.”
His arrival comes at a crucial time for Surrey, with Ollie Pope, Jamie Smith, and Gus Atkinson likely to be unavailable due to England duties ahead of their one-off Test against Zimbabwe starting May 22.
Alec Stewart, Surrey’s High-Performance Advisor, welcomed the addition:
“With the non-availability of our England players, I’m pleased to add Kurtis Patterson to the squad. He’s a top-quality cricketer who brings experience and depth to our batting lineup.”
Patterson joins a growing list of Australians playing in the County Championship this season, which includes Cameron Green and Cameron Bancroft (Gloucestershire), Daniel Hughes (Sussex), Peter Handscomb (Leicestershire), and Caleb Jewell (Derbyshire).
Elsewhere, Beau Webster, a seam-bowling all-rounder, is set to make his County Championship debut for Warwickshire against Yorkshire, a match that will also feature fellow Australian Jordan Buckingham.
