Shreyas Iyer to Bat at No. 3 for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, Eyes National Comeback

New Delhi – After playing a crucial role in India’s recent Champions Trophy win at No. 4, Shreyas Iyer is set to take on a new challenge in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In the upcoming 2025 season, Iyer will bat at No. 3 for Punjab Kings, aiming to make a strong statement and pave his way back into India’s T20 squad.

Although not currently part of India’s T20 setup, Iyer is determined to use the IPL platform to showcase his prowess and re-establish himself in the national side. Last season, he led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a championship title, batting in the middle order. However, this season brings a new team, new role, and renewed ambition.

Speaking to the media alongside Punjab Kings’ head coach Ricky Ponting, Iyer said,

“We all know that the IPL is an integral part of Indian cricket, and if there’s one position I want to make my own in T20s, it’s No. 3. That’s where my focus lies. I won’t say we have a rigid plan about my batting position, but I’m clear in my mind. As long as the coach backs me, I’ll continue to focus on that role.”

Ponting, former Australian captain, heaped praise on Iyer and expressed enthusiasm about working with him again.

“I was eager to reunite with Shreyas. We had a great professional relationship during our time at Delhi Capitals. He’s one of the best players I’ve worked with – a great human being and an IPL-winning captain. You can’t ask for more. He joined the team a few days ago and is already making his mark as a leader,” Ponting said.

Punjab Kings are gearing up for their opening match on March 25 against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. With Iyer set to take on a key top-order role, fans and selectors alike will be watching closely as he looks to impress and make a case for his return to India’s T20 team.
