Lucknow: Professor Ishwar Reddy, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, delivered a comprehensive lecture on the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) International Observatory in the Ashutosh Pradhan Auditorium of the Department of Physics, Lucknow University. The lecture attracted an eager audience from both the university community and the associated colleges.
Interestingly, the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) is the world’s largest optical telescope which is going to be installed in Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Because of the thirty meter mirror installed in this next generation telescope, it has been named Thirty Meter Telescope i.e. TMT. It will capture ultraviolet images combined with mid-infrared wavelengths to capture clear images. It is estimated to cost around Rs 54 billion in its construction. TMT will be able to take photographs of celestial bodies located 13 billion light years away, whereas according to the principles of science, the other end of the universe is likely to be at a greater distance. TMT will be nine times larger than the existing optical telescope and will be able to take three times clearer pictures and other information related to the evolution of the universe from the beginning of the universe will be obtained.
