Sports, Not Just Winning: Agassi’s Key Lesson for Children

Sports

Bengaluru: Tennis legend Andre Agassi recently emphasized the importance of sports in education during his address at the TiE Global Summit 2024 in Bengaluru. He highlighted how sports teach children vital lessons, particularly how to handle setbacks. “Even after a setback, you must get back up and try again the next day. Sports teach us that the emphasis on winning and losing is really a diversion from the important things in life. We must be considering ways to improve,” Agassi said.

In addition to his sporting legacy, Agassi has been a passionate advocate for education. Since 2001, he has funded the construction of 130 schools that serve around 80,000 disadvantaged children in the United States. He attributes his ability to achieve such milestones to the resilience he developed through his intense tennis career.

“The core of sports is problem-solving,” Agassi continued. “I learned how to remain objective and solve problems in a highly demanding setting via tennis. It helps me comprehend the context of what I’m doing in addition to being present.” Reflecting on his rebellious period, Agassi noted that those challenges were essential for him to evolve into the person he is today.
