Sitapur: In a remarkable act of compassion, the family of 69-year-old Santosh Mahendra of New Basti, Sitapur, donated his eyes following his death, offering the possibility of restored vision to two people in need.
Mahendra, son of Kailash Narayan Mahendra, passed away on Saturday evening. After his death, his family contacted Saksham Sanstha and expressed their wish to donate his eyes. Responding promptly, the organisation initiated the eye donation process and coordinated with doctors to preserve both eyes.
According to the organisation, the donated corneas will be transplanted free of cost into two needy recipients, potentially bringing light and colour back into their lives.
Medical Team Completes Eye Donation Procedure
Saksham Sanstha representative Mukesh Agrawal reached the hospital and coordinated the formation of the medical team. Doctors subsequently visited the donor’s residence, where both eyes were safely retrieved.
The medical team involved in the procedure included Dr Arunesh Mishra, Dr Ritu Sharma, Dr Ayushi, Dr Pallavi, Harshita and Shifa.
The organisation said its members remain available around the clock to facilitate eye donations whenever families come forward, regardless of the time of day or night.
Saksham’s Eye Donation Campaign Since 2008
Saksham Sanstha has been working to promote awareness about eye donation in Sitapur since 2008. Through its campaign, the organisation has facilitated 284 eye donations so far through Eye Hospital, Sitapur.
These donations have helped provide opportunities for people with visual disabilities to experience the beauty of the world. The initiative has received continued support from residents of Sitapur, who have contributed to a culture of compassion and service through eye donation.
Organisation’s Founders and Ongoing Efforts
The organisation was founded by social workers Mahesh Agrawal and Subhash Agnihotri. At present, Sandeep Bhartiya, Mukesh Agrawal, Vikas Agrawal and Akshat Agrawal are carrying forward its activities.
Its primary objective is to educate people about the importance of eye donation and ensure that its benefits reach those who need them.
