Mumbai: Actress Ashmita Bakshi has opened up about the constant pressure actors can face to maintain a certain appearance and conform to conventional beauty standards in the entertainment industry. The actress believes that while actors may sometimes hear comments about their body or appearance, what truly matters is being confident and comfortable in one’s own skin.
Talking exclusively to IANS, Ashmita was asked about the pressure actors face when they are told to change their body or appearance to fit a particular role, and how such comments can affect their confidence.
Sharing her perspective, Ashmita said, “Sometimes, when you go to a producer or director, they may tell you that you need to be a little thinner. They may comment on different aspects of your appearance and say that you might get a job if you change certain things. When you hear such things repeatedly, it can definitely affect your confidence.”
However, the actress feels that the industry today has space for different kinds of people and appearances. She added, “In a particular project, you will find all kinds of actors — thin, plus-sized, dark, tall, fair, and everything else. There is a place for everyone. Every character has a different requirement, and I don’t think there should be one fixed definition of how an actor should look.”
Ashmita also feels that the perception of beauty has evolved over the years. “I think the era has gone when only a person’s complexion or body type constituted the definition of beauty. Today, it is much more about confidence, talent and the way you carry yourself,” she shared.
The actress further emphasised that changing oneself should be a personal choice rather than something done purely because of external pressure. “Unless you personally want to look a particular way, I feel you should simply be confident in your own skin. You don’t have to change yourself just because somebody else thinks you should look a certain way,” Ashmita concluded
