Paris: After finishing fourth in the women’s 49kg weightlifting competition at the Paris Olympics, Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu expressed disappointment and vowed to work hard for future competitions. Chanu missed out on a medal by finishing fourth with a total of 199kg.
She shared her feelings in a video posted by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), in the video she said, “I tried my best to win a medal for the country, but today I missed out… This is a part of sports, we all win and lose sometimes… Next time I will work hard to win a medal for the country… I will try my best and do my best in the next Games.”
For India and Chanu, it was another fourth place in Paris, when they missed out on a medal with a total of 199kg. The first was the snatch event, in which the lifter has to pick up the barbell and lift it above his head in a single attempt.
The second was the clean-and-jerk event, in which the lifter has to lift the barbell to his chest (clean) and then raise it above his head with straight elbows by extending his arms and legs (jerk). The lifter has to keep it there until the buzzer rings.
Hou Zhihui of China won the gold medal with a total of 206 kg, Mihaela Valentina Cambei of Romania won the silver with 205 kg and Surodchan Khambao of Thailand won the bronze with 200 kg. India has so far won three bronze medals at the Paris Olympics and all have come in shooting.
