Lucknow: With just six months left until the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, BSP supremo Mayawati has already begun laying the groundwork for her party’s campaign. The organizational restructuring that has taken place within the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) over the past few weeks sends a clear message: Mayawati is determined to leave no stone unturned this time.
On one hand, Mayawati has entrusted her nephew Akash Anand with leading the party’s organization and election campaign. On the other, she has elevated Satish Chandra Mishra, the party’s trusted Brahmin face, to greater responsibility. This dual strategy is being seen as an attempt to balance the BSP’s social equations while addressing concerns about succession and familial continuity.
A Turbulent History of Succession
The BSP has seen its share of ups and downs regarding succession in recent years. At one point, Mayawati declared Akash Anand as her heir, but following controversies, she removed him from party positions. However, as the assembly elections draw near, the party has brought him back into an active role. Akash Anand is now functioning as National Coordinator, and he has been given the important responsibility of screening and selecting candidates.
Under his leadership, worker conferences will be held where potential candidates’ names will be finalized. As part of this new role, Akash Anand launched his campaign from Sadabad in Hathras on August 10. A worker conference is also scheduled to be held in Jewar, Gautam Budh Nagar, on August 25 under his chairmanship.
According to party sources, following a three-day meeting in Lucknow, the decision was made to give Akash Anand an active role in UP and Uttarakhand politics—something from which he had been deliberately kept away previously. Party officials believe that taking charge of the campaign will strengthen Akash Anand’s political standing.
However, Mayawati has made one thing clear: the final and supreme decision on ticket distribution rests solely with her. Akash Anand will have no decisive role in this matter. Political observers view this statement as a deliberate attempt to maintain a balance of power. The message is unmistakable: while her nephew will handle campaign and organizational work, real power will remain firmly in Mayawati’s hands.
Satish Mishra’s Expanded Responsibilities
In another significant organizational move, the BSP has expanded the responsibilities of National General Secretary Satish Chandra Mishra. He will now oversee legal and media operations in addition to handling crucial responsibilities related to the Election Commission. Mayawati herself posted on social media that as part of the 2027 UP Assembly election preparations, the party is strengthening its base across all social sections, and the process of candidate selection and announcement is being conducted through assembly-level worker conferences.
She claimed that the BSP’s preparations have created unease among opposition parties.
The Brahmin Vote Bank Strategy
Satish Chandra Mishra’s expanded role is not a sudden development. The Brahmin vote bank has always been a crucial social equation for the BSP, and Mishra has been central to this dynamic for decades. However, in recent years, several prominent Brahmin leaders have gradually abandoned the party. Former Minister Nakul Dubey defected to Congress in 2022, while other leaders like former Minister Ramvir Upadhyay, Rangnath Mishra, and Vinay Shankar Tiwari have also moved away from the party.
Recently, former Health Minister Anant Kumar Mishra, also known as Antu Mishra, was expelled for anti-party activities. Interestingly, Antu Mishra was considered close to Satish Chandra Mishra, and there was speculation he might defect to another party before the elections. Against this backdrop, the steady exodus of Brahmin leaders from the BSP’s political cadre has become a concern for the party.
In this context, Mayawati’s trust in Satish Mishra and expansion of his responsibilities is being seen as a strategy to stem this hemorrhaging and keep the remaining Brahmin support base united. The party now wants to bet entirely on Mishra’s face and organizational experience to revive its old image as a party with support across all sections of society.
The Dual Strategy Explained
Mayawati’s dual strategy—institutionalizing family succession through Akash Anand while placing experienced faces like Satish Mishra at the forefront to manage social equations—is seen as determining the BSP’s future direction. Through Akash Anand, the party wants to convey the message of young and active leadership, while through Satish Mishra, it is attempting to retain its traditional social base and organizational experience.
Political analysts believe that for the BSP, the 2027 election is not merely a battle for power, but a question about the party’s very survival. After consistently weak performances in recent elections, the party needs to strengthen its core voter base while building new social equations. It will be interesting to see how Akash Anand’s activism and Satish Chandra Mishra’s new role together expand the BSP’s base, and whether the party can turn into reality the unease among opposition parties that Mayawati herself claims to have caused.
