Lucknow: The Lucknow Golf Club has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of  Vijay Kumar, one of India’s most accomplished professional golfers and a former Indian Open champion.

In an official obituary issued on Tuesday, the club’s Managing Committee paid rich tributes to Kumar, describing him as a “true giant of Indian golf” whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of players. He was also a distinguished member of the club.

Born in Lucknow on December 29, 1968, Vijay Kumar turned professional in 1988 and went on to dominate the Indian domestic golf circuit through the mid-1990s and early 2000s. Over the course of his illustrious career, he clinched multiple titles and was crowned Order of Merit Champion on the Indian professional circuit four times, cementing his position among the country’s elite golfers.

His most celebrated achievement came in 2002, when he secured a memorable victory at the Indian Open held at the Delhi Golf Club. The triumph remains one of the defining moments of his career and a proud chapter in Indian golf history.

Kumar also had the honour of representing India on the international stage at the prestigious Alfred Dunhill Cup in 1999, held at St Andrews, Scotland—often regarded as the spiritual home of golf.

Remembered not only for his exceptional skill on the course but also for his warm personality, Vijay Kumar was known for his ever-smiling demeanor, positive outlook, and sharp sense of humour. The club noted that his sportsmanship and character earned him admiration both within and beyond the golfing community.

“With his passing, we have lost a sporting legend and an esteemed member of our club,” the statement read. “His extraordinary accomplishments, built on immense talent, dedication, and passion, have left a lasting imprint on Indian golf.”

The club’s office bearers, including President Dr. Subhash Chandra, Captain R.S. Nanda, and Honorary Secretary Rajneesh Sethi, extended heartfelt condolences to Kumar’s family. They prayed for strength and solace for his loved ones during this difficult time.

The golfing fraternity across the country is expected to remember Vijay Kumar’s contributions as a defining force in shaping modern Indian golf.
