Lt Gen Sanjay Mitra Takes Over as GOC-in-C of Indian Army’s Surya Command

Lucknow: Lieutenant General Sanjay Mitra, AVSM, assumed charge as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Indian Army’s Surya Command in Lucknow on October 1, 2026.

Following the assumption of command, the Army Commander paid homage to fallen soldiers at the Smritika War Memorial in Lucknow, honouring their courage and supreme sacrifice. He subsequently inspected the Guard of Honour at a ceremonial parade.

Lt Gen Mitra reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining the highest standards of operational preparedness, enhancing strategic response capabilities and strengthening multi-domain capabilities across the theatre. He also extended his greetings and best wishes to all ranks of Surya Command, Veer Naris, veterans, defence civilian personnel and their families.

Commissioned into the Grenadiers Regiment from the Indian Military Academy on June 10, 1989, Lt Gen Mitra has had a distinguished career spanning over three decades, during which he has held several key command and staff appointments.

He has commanded an infantry battalion, an infantry brigade and an infantry division. His instructional assignments include serving at the Commando School, Belgaum, and as Chief Instructor (Army) at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He has also served as Squadron Commander at the National Security Guard and Colonel General Staff at the Faculty of Studies, Army War College.

After promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General, he assumed command of 1 Corps as its General Officer Commanding on June 9, 2023, and relinquished the appointment on June 17, 2025. He subsequently served as Director General of Operational Logistics and Strategic Movement at Army Headquarters.

His appointment as GOC-in-C marks a new chapter in the leadership of Surya Command, with a focus on operational readiness and strengthening the Army’s capabilities.
