Khaled Meshaal likely to lead Hamas next

Tehran: The body of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyya was paid tribute at Tehran University. The prayers held on this occasion were led by Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei. Now Haniyya’s body will be taken to Doha, the capital of Qatar, where his funeral will be held.

After the funeral, a meeting of Hamas’s Shura Council will be held in Doha in which a new head of the organization’s politburo will be elected in place of Haniyya. He will be chosen as someone who is from outside Gaza and West Bank and has experience of international diplomacy in support of Palestine.

In this regard, Khaled Meshaal Hamas, the former head of Hamas’ political wing, can be made the head of the politburo. But there are many other contenders in the organization, including Khalil al Haya and Moussa Abu Mazrouk.

According to experts, a big name in the organization is Yahya Sinwar, but Sinwar is considered important for the activities of Gaza and cannot be assigned a role for external activities. Sinwar is the most wanted item by the Israeli army in the ten-month-long war in Gaza.
