Mumbai: India survived a tense finish to beat Japan by two runs in their first and only T20 International against the hosts at Sano International Cricket Ground. Persistent rain reduced the match to five overs per side, turning the contest into a dramatic low-scoring affair.
After winning the toss, India opted to bat but struggled on the rain-affected surface, managing just 32 for four in five overs. Captain Shreyas Iyer top-scored with 16 off 13 balls, while Sanju Samson contributed nine from seven deliveries. Japan’s 17-year-old left-arm spinner Charlie Hara Heinz was the standout bowler, taking two wickets for 17 runs.
Chasing 33, Japan made a strong start but lost wickets at crucial moments. Washington Sundar claimed two wickets for 13 runs, while Axar Patel bowled a tight final over, conceding only five runs. Japan finished on 30 for three in five overs.
Kendall Kadokawa Fleming scored 12 off 12 balls, while Benjamin Ito Davis remained unbeaten on nine. Iyer was named Player of the Match as India held their nerve to secure a narrow victory.
