Hui Gumm Yaadein actress Jyoti Tiwari: “We should focus more on what connects us rather than highlighting our differences”

Mumbai: Actress Jyoti Tiwari, who is currently seen as Suhasini in Hui Gumm Yaadein, believes that peace goes far beyond simply living without conflict. For her, true peace comes from within and is closely connected to acceptance, empathy, patience and the ability to let go of things beyond one’s control.

Talking about what peace means to her, Jyoti says, “For me, peace is not just about there being no conflict. It’s about having a sense of calm within yourself. When your mind is at peace, you don’t feel the need to constantly react, prove something, or carry unnecessary negativity. I feel peace is being able to accept things, let go of what you can’t control, and still stay positive.”

The actress also feels that understanding and empathy are essential for maintaining meaningful relationships and preventing disagreements from escalating. “I don’t think lasting peace is possible without understanding and empathy. We don’t always have to agree with each other, but at least we should try to understand where the other person is coming from. A little empathy can change the way we communicate and even prevent small disagreements from becoming bigger conflicts,” she shares.

For Jyoti, creating a peaceful environment does not always require grand gestures. She believes that simple acts of kindness, patience and choosing not to react impulsively can make a significant difference. “I think simply being kind and not reacting to everything can create a lot of peace. Sometimes we are so quick to judge, argue or respond when we could just pause and listen. Even a little patience and a kind word can make someone’s day better,” she says.

Reflecting on what can bring people together despite differences in opinions, backgrounds and interests, Jyoti points towards the emotions that connect everyone. “I think what brings people together is remembering that, despite our differences, we all have very similar basic emotions. We all want love, respect, security and happiness. We may have different opinions or backgrounds, but if we focus more on what connects us rather than constantly highlighting our differences, I think there can be much more understanding,” she explains.

The actress believes that creating a more peaceful society is a shared responsibility, with both institutions and individuals having an important role to play. “I think it has to begin at both levels. Institutions and governments have a huge responsibility, but individuals and communities also have a role to play in the way we treat each other every day. Change at a larger level is important, but I also believe that peace starts with our own behaviour, our own homes and our own communities,” Jyoti says.

She further reflects on the meaning of reconciliation and believes that moving forward does not necessarily mean erasing painful experiences. “I wish people understood that reconciliation doesn’t always mean forgetting what happened or pretending that nothing happened. Sometimes it simply means choosing to move forward without carrying that anger forever. You can acknowledge the hurt, learn from it, set your boundaries and still choose peace. I think that is a very powerful form of healing,” she concludes.
