Paris: Elon Musk has been asked to appear in Paris this week as French authorities intensify their investigation into allegations involving the social media platform X (social media platform). The inquiry is examining concerns over the dissemination of harmful online content, potential regulatory breaches, and the role of artificial intelligence systems in content moderation.
Former X chief executive Linda Yaccarino has also been invited for discussions with investigators. However, it remains unclear whether either of them will attend the voluntary hearings scheduled by the Paris prosecutor’s office.
Voluntary hearings under ongoing scrutiny
Officials have clarified that the current summonses are part of voluntary interviews, intended to provide executives and associated personnel an opportunity to respond to allegations and explain internal practices. Several employees linked to the platform are also expected to be questioned throughout the week.
The investigation was formally opened in January 2025 by France’s cybercrime division and gained momentum after a search operation at X’s French offices earlier this year. Authorities have emphasized that the process is currently focused on compliance and fact-finding rather than immediate prosecution.

French investigators are reviewing multiple concerns, including claims that the platform facilitated the spread of explicit content involving minors and the circulation of manipulated media, including deepfake-generated imagery. Authorities are also examining whether algorithmic systems may have unintentionally amplified or distorted certain categories of content.
Particular attention has been drawn to incidents involving X’s artificial intelligence system, Grok, which reportedly generated controversial outputs, including historically sensitive and inappropriate material. Although corrections were later issued, the initial responses triggered widespread criticism and regulatory scrutiny.
International legal and regulatory tensions
French prosecutors have also communicated aspects of the case to U.S. authorities, raising concerns that online activity linked to the platform could have influenced corporate valuation issues connected to Musk’s broader business interests. However, American officials have reportedly pushed back, citing concerns over jurisdiction and free expression protections.

Additional pressure from watchdog groups
Adding to the scrutiny, press freedom organization Reporters Without Borders has filed a separate complaint against X, alleging insufficient moderation of misleading content and inadequate responses to takedown requests. The group argues that these practices undermine public access to reliable information.
