Reflecting on the conversations this season, Mohammed says every guest brought something unique, but one interview stood out. “Every guest brings a completely different energy, but my conversation with Baseer Ali really stayed with me,” he said.
He was impressed by Baseer’s honesty. “He came on the show with absolutely no filter. When we got into the reality TV space, he didn’t hesitate for a second to name who he thinks is a real-life red flag in the industry,” he said.
However, it wasn’t the controversy that stayed with him. “What surprised me most was his maturity regarding the nature of stardom. He openly admitted that not winning every reality show was a blessing in disguise because it kept him hungry and motivated to transition into a proper actor,” he said.
For Mohammed, that perspective was refreshing. “Seeing someone who has been in the hyper-glamorous reality TV bubble speak so deeply about prioritizing inner peace and long-term career stability over fleeting digital validation was incredibly refreshing,” he said.
His work at Hoonur has also shaped the way he interviews artists. “My role at Hoonur across Balaji Telefilms, Motion Pictures, and Digital gives me a unique backstage pass to an artist’s psychology,” he said.
Unlike viewers, he witnesses the struggles behind the glamour. “I see them when they are auditioning, when they are signing contracts, and when they are fighting for the right roles. I don’t just see the finished, glamorous product on television or OTT; I see the raw potential and the hustle it takes to get polished,” he said.
That understanding influences every question he asks. “Because I understand their anxieties, their ambitions, and the business side of entertainment, my interview questions don’t scratch the surface. I ask things from a place of deep industry context, which immediately signals to the artist that I speak their language,” he said.
Despite asking difficult questions, Mohammed believes respect should never be compromised. “Intent is everything,” he said.
According to him, guests can immediately sense the motive behind a question.
“If you ask a bold or uncomfortable question purely to stir up drama, the guest will sense it instantly and shut down. But if you ask a tough question because it uncovers an authentic truth about their journey or the industry, it becomes an intellectual conversation,” he said.
He admits he isn’t afraid to challenge evasive responses. “I am direct, if I don’t like something or if an answer feels evasive, I am honest about it,” he said.
“But the foundation of the podcast is rooted in mutual respect. You can dissect a controversy or a failure with dignity without trying to patronize or grill the individual,” he added.
Talking about the industry’s changing landscape, Mohammed believes talent alone is no longer enough. “The landscape has evolved drastically, and today’s artists need to understand that talent alone is no longer a guarantee,” he said.
He believes digital visibility and acting ability must go hand in hand. “Chasing algorithms blindly is a short-term trap. Social media can get you visibility, but your capability on set determines your longevity,” he said.
Asked whether celebrities have become more guarded than before, Mohammed didn’t hesitate. “Absolutely, they are terrified of cancel culture and the viral clipping industry where a 10-second reel can completely distort a 40-minute conversation,” he said.
He feels this has made interviews increasingly predictable. “It has made a lot of celebrities hyper-rehearsed and diplomatic, which frankly makes for very boring viewing,” he said.
For him, that’s exactly why Honestly, Why Not? Exists. “When guests come to my set, they know we aren’t editing their words out of context to manufacture a controversy,” he said.
And once that trust is built, the conversations change completely. “Once they realize that the environment is secure, they gladly step out of their guarded shells and give the audience the raw honesty they’ve been waiting for,” Nagaman said.
