Chandigarh: Jailed Amritpal Singh, who won the election from Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat, has been allowed to take oath as MP. He will take oath in Parliament House on July 5. Faridkot MP Sarabjit Singh Khalsa met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and sought permission. Amritpal Singh, lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam, will take oath in the Speaker’s room.
According to the rules, oath has to be taken within 60 days
Reportedly, according to the rules, an elected MP has to take oath within 60 days. The National Security Act (NSA) on Amritpal Singh has been extended for one year. Amritpal Singh’s lawyer said that the duration of NSA will remain till 23 April 2025. On the other hand, Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar, in his reaction to Amritpal Singh being allowed to take oath, said that according to the law, any elected public representative can be allowed to take oath.
Bail granted with conditions
Amritpal Singh has been granted parole for a period of 4 days or less from July 5 with some conditions. According to the information, Amritpal Singh, a Khalistani supporter lodged in Dibrugarh jail, will be taken to Delhi by Amritsar Police on July 5, where he will take oath as an MP. After taking oath as an MP in the Lok Sabha, Amritpal Singh will be taken back to Dibrugarh jail. During this time, Amritpal Singh will not be allowed to meet anyone.
It is worth noting that in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, independent candidate Amritpal Singh won the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat by about 2 lakh votes. Amritpal defeated Congress’ Kulbir Singh Jeera by 1 lakh 97 thousand 120 votes.
