Lucknow / New Delhi: The Congress has stepped up its organisational preparations in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the Assembly elections, with the party’s newly appointed state in-charge, Rajendra Pal Gautam, allocating responsibilities to six national secretaries serving as co-in-charges for different regions and districts.
Under the new arrangement, Abdul Hannan has been assigned the Awadh region, Kunal Chaudhary will oversee Braj, Varun Chaudhary will be responsible for Prayagraj, Jagdish Chandra Jangid has been given charge of Bundelkhand, Abhishek Dutt will oversee Purvanchal and Sanjeev Arya will be responsible for the western region.
The allocation was finalised on Monday as the Congress looks to strengthen its organisational machinery ahead of the proposed 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Leadership Directs Party to Complete Organisation Work
At a meeting held in Delhi, the Congress leadership directed the Uttar Pradesh unit to speed up the remaining organisational work.The meeting, attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, focused on completing the stalled process of building the party organisation across the state.
The Congress plans to establish its district-level organisation through a five-tier structure. However, in several parts of the state, the process has so far progressed only up to the block level.
The central leadership has instructed the state unit to accelerate organisational activities and ensure that the party machinery is fully operational ahead of the next Assembly elections.The newly appointed Congress secretaries, who have been given the role of co-in-charges in Uttar Pradesh, will monitor organisational activities in their respective areas and coordinate with the state unit.
Six Co-In-Charges and Their Districts
Awadh: Abdul Hannan has been given responsibility for Lucknow, Unnao, Bahraich, Barabanki, Balrampur, Shravasti, Gonda, Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Hardoi and Rae Bareli.Purvanchal: Abhishek Dutt will oversee Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj, Gorakhpur, Basti, Kushinagar, Azamgarh, Mau, Deoria, Ballia, Sant Kabir Nagar, Ayodhya and Ambedkar Nagar.
Prayagraj Region: Varun Chaudhary has been assigned Varanasi, Ghazipur, Chandauli, Jaunpur, Bhadohi, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Amethi and Sultanpur.
Bundelkhand: Jagdish Chandra Jangid will be responsible for Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, Kannauj, Auraiya, Jalaun, Mahoba, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Banda, Chitrakoot, Fatehpur, Hamirpur and Etawah.
Braj: Kunal Chaudhary will oversee Agra, Firozabad, Etah, Mainpuri, Kasganj, Aligarh, Hathras, Mathura, Budaun, Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit and Farrukhabad.
Western Uttar Pradesh: Sanjeev Arya has been assigned Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, Baghpat, Bulandshahr, Ghaziabad, Sambhal, Meerut, Bijnor, Hapur, Amroha, Moradabad, Rampur and Gautam Buddh Nagar.
BJP Also Yet to Complete Several District Teams
Meanwhile, the BJP is also facing delays in completing its organisational teams in more than half a dozen organisational districts in Uttar Pradesh.Districts where teams have reportedly not yet been announced include Hathras, Ambedkar Nagar, Deoria, Chandauli and Gorakhpur Metropolitan, among others.
The delay has led to continued consultations and recommendations for organisational posts. In several places, new office-bearers are yet to be appointed, while the removal of some existing office-bearers is reportedly expected.

The BJP is simultaneously working to strengthen its organisational structure from the grassroots level as part of its preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections.Following the announcement of the state team, the party has accelerated the formation of regional teams and various frontal organisations.
Party leaders expect much of this process to be completed within the next 10 days.At present, around eight to nine districts are believed to have district presidents in place but are yet to finalise their teams.

District presidents have been announced in phases, with some districts receiving their appointments later than others.These include Varanasi district, Sant Kabir Nagar, Deoria, Chandauli, Hathras, Gorakhpur Metropolitan and Ambedkar Nagar, among others.
The BJP’s organisational structure is designed to take party programmes and campaigns from the state level to regions, districts, mandals and finally booth-level units. The absence of complete district teams therefore affects the implementation of organisational activities on the ground.
Representatives Lobby for Key Organisational Posts
With district teams still being finalised, elected representatives have reportedly become active in recommending their preferred leaders for positions in the new organisational structures.
Party sources indicate that preparations for forming the remaining district teams are largely complete, and announcements for the pending districts are expected soon.
The organisational restructuring by both the Congress and BJP highlights the growing focus on strengthening grassroots machinery as Uttar Pradesh’s major political parties prepare for the 2027 Assembly elections.
