Raebareli: Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raebareli, have achieved a major surgical milestone by successfully removing a massive 7.5-kilogram uterine tumour from a 46-year-old woman. The highly complex, multidisciplinary procedure was completed successfully, and the patient has since made a full recovery and has been discharged from the hospital.
The woman had been suffering from progressive abdominal swelling for a prolonged period. Medical investigations revealed a giant uterine tumour measuring approximately 30 × 30 × 20 centimetres, occupying most of the abdominal cavity. Doctors also diagnosed multiple uterine fibroids and an umbilical hernia. The case was particularly challenging because the patient had pre-existing diabetes and hypertension, significantly increasing the surgical risk.
The operation, which lasted for more than three hours, was led by Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dr Parul Sinha, along with Associate Professor Dr Apala Priyadarshini. The umbilical hernia was treated with the support of Dr Shirish from the Department of General Surgery, while Dr Kalicharan Das supervised the anaesthesia. The multidisciplinary team successfully removed the giant tumour along with the associated abnormalities without complications.
According to the medical team, the patient’s post-operative recovery was smooth, and she remained clinically stable throughout her hospital stay. Following satisfactory improvement in her condition, she was discharged in good health.
Dr Parul Sinha said the successful management of such a rare and complicated case reflects AIIMS Raebareli’s advanced surgical capabilities and integrated multidisciplinary approach to women’s healthcare. She emphasised that the institute is equipped with modern surgical technologies and specialist expertise to treat complex gynaecological conditions effectively.
The institute also acknowledged the leadership of Executive Director Dr Amita Jain in strengthening patient care services and recognised the administrative support and guidance provided by Additional Medical Superintendent Dr Neeraj Srivastava, describing teamwork and coordinated clinical efforts as the key factors behind the successful outcome.
