Lucknow: Pranav Mittal has established a cooperative of over 30 chikankari artisans in Lucknow, creating a sustainable model that strengthens artisan livelihoods while preserving one of India’s most celebrated traditional crafts.
The cooperative was launched following extensive primary research into the economic challenges faced by chikankari artisans. The study identified persistent issues including low and unstable incomes, dependence on intermediaries, limited financial literacy, inadequate digital adoption, and restricted access to larger markets. To address these structural barriers, the initiative united artisans under a cooperative framework, enabling them to work
collectively, strengthen their bargaining power, and build a more resilient artisan community.
Designed as a long-term solution, the cooperative promotes collective entrepreneurship by allowing artisans to share resources, access larger business opportunities, and negotiate better prices. Members also collaborate on production, exchange knowledge, and support one another in preserving traditional craftsmanship while adapting to changing market demands.
Alongside the cooperative, the initiative conducts workshops on financial literacy, budgeting, digital marketing, pricing strategies, product branding, and e-commerce. These training sessions equip artisans with practical business skills, enabling them to engage directly with customers, expand their digital presence, and reduce dependence on intermediaries. The cooperative also facilitates participation in exhibitions and local artisan fairs, helping
members reach wider audiences and generate additional sales opportunities.
Beyond improving incomes, the initiative seeks to preserve Lucknow’s rich chikankari heritage by encouraging younger generations to view the craft as both culturally significant and economically sustainable. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern entrepreneurial practices, the cooperative demonstrates that heritage preservation and economic development can advance together.
