Mbappé Carries France’s Hopes as Spain Stand in the Way of Another World Cup Final

New Delhi: France will look to star forward Kylian Mbappé to inspire them into a third consecutive FIFA World Cup final when they face reigning European champions Spain in the first semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Dallas. The clash pits one of the tournament’s most potent attacks against Spain’s disciplined defence, led by goalkeeper Unai Simón.

Mbappé has been in sensational form, scoring eight goals in six matches to share the tournament’s scoring lead with Argentina captain Lionel Messi. The French captain has already established himself as one of the World Cup’s greatest performers, having helped France lift the trophy in 2018 and scored a memorable hat-trick in the 2022 final against Argentina despite France’s penalty shootout defeat.

Two-time champions France are appearing in their eighth World Cup semi-final and are just one win away from becoming only the second European nation, after Germany, to reach three successive World Cup finals. Didier Deschamps’ side has advanced through victories over Senegal, Iraq and Norway in the group stage before eliminating Sweden, Portugal and Morocco in the knockout rounds.

Spain, meanwhile, are contesting only their fourth World Cup semi-final and are seeking a second world title after their historic triumph in 2010. Under coach Luis de la Fuente, Spain have regained their status among football’s elite, building on recent UEFA Nations League and European Championship successes. The Spaniards have also enjoyed the upper hand over France in recent meetings, including victories in the UEFA Nations League and UEFA Euro 2024.

While Mbappé leads France’s attack, he is supported by a formidable cast that includes Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise, Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola. France’s midfield, marshalled by Manu Koné and Adrien Rabiot, complements a solid defence featuring Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba, which has conceded only two goals throughout the tournament.

Spain’s greatest strength has been its defensive organisation. Goalkeeper Unai Simón has conceded just one goal in six matches, while full-backs Marc Cucurella and Pedro Porro provide defensive stability and attacking width. Midfielders Rodri, Pedri and Dani Olmo control possession, while teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal spearhead an exciting frontline.

Ahead of the contest, Mbappé said France remained focused on winning the tournament, acknowledging that the road ahead would be even tougher than their journey so far.

Coach Didier Deschamps praised his team’s progress and expressed confidence that Mbappé had recovered well from an ankle concern, insisting France had reached exactly the stage they had targeted.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente described the semi-final as a meeting between two footballing powerhouses and said his players believed they could once again overcome France.

Teenage star Lamine Yamal also struck a confident tone, saying Spain respected France but feared no opponent, adding that his primary objective was helping his country secure another World Cup title rather than chasing individual accolades.
