AIIMS Raebareli Removes Mango Seed from Patient’s Stomach Through Endoscopy, Avoiding Surgery

Raebareli: The Department of General Surgery at AIIMS Raebareli has achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully removing a mango seed lodged in a patient’s stomach using therapeutic upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, eliminating the need for surgery. The procedure marks the institute’s first such therapeutic endoscopic intervention.

The patient, a 53-year-old man, was admitted to the hospital after accidentally swallowing a three-centimetre-long mango seed. He complained of persistent vomiting following the incident. As the foreign object was not clearly visible on an X-ray, doctors decided to perform an urgent Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (UGIE) to diagnose and treat the condition.

The endoscopy team, comprising Dr. Amritanshu Saurabh, Dr. Pranabh Kushwaha, Dr. Raunak Mehrotra, Dr. Yogesh Srivastava, Dr. Sheshnath, Dr. Imjung, Dr. Abhijeet, and Dr. Himanshu, with the assistance of Nursing Officer Swati, successfully retrieved the mango seed through an endoscope without requiring any surgical incision.

The patient recovered well after the procedure and is now reported to be in good health.

The Department of General Surgery credited the achievement to the guidance and continuous support of Executive Director Dr. Amita Jain and Additional Medical Superintendent and Unit Head Dr. Neeraj Srivastava.

Congratulating the medical team, Dr. Amita Jain said AIIMS Raebareli remains committed to providing advanced, safe, and minimally invasive treatment options that improve patient outcomes while reducing the need for major surgery.

Dr. Neeraj Srivastava praised the team’s expertise and said the department would continue expanding its advanced therapeutic endoscopy services to offer high-quality, modern healthcare to patients across the region.

The successful procedure highlights AIIMS Raebareli’s growing capabilities in minimally invasive gastrointestinal interventions and its commitment to adopting advanced medical technologies for better patient care.
