Colombia Open World Cup Campaign with Impressive 3-1 Victory Over Uzbekistan

New Delhi: Colombia made a commanding start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, defeating World Cup debutants Uzbekistan 3-1 in an entertaining Group K encounter in Mexico City. Inspired by the creativity and attacking brilliance of striker Luis Díaz, the South American side overcame a resilient Uzbek challenge to secure all three points.

Colombia dominated much of the opening half and finally broke the deadlock five minutes before the interval. Díaz delivered a precise pass to Daniel Muñoz, who calmly flicked the ball into the net to give his side a deserved lead.

Uzbekistan responded positively after the break and drew level in the 60th minute through Abubek Fayzullaev, who capitalised on an opportunity inside the box to make it 1-1.

The parity, however, lasted only five minutes. Díaz showcased his individual brilliance with a powerful low strike from inside the area that found its way past goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov, restoring Colombia’s advantage.

Uzbekistan continued to battle hard, but Colombia sealed the victory deep into stoppage time when Jhon Arias set up Jaminton Campaz, who finished confidently to make it 3-1.

The result gives Colombia an ideal start to their Group K campaign, while Uzbekistan displayed encouraging signs despite defeat in their historic first appearance at football’s biggest tournament.
