Governor Anandiben Patel Visits Thol Bird Sanctuary in Gujarat
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel visited the Thol Wildlife (Bird) Sanctuary located in Mehsana district near Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The sanctuary is internationally recognised as a Ramsar Site for its rich wetland ecosystem and diverse birdlife.

During her visit, the Governor undertook birdwatching activities within the sanctuary, where local ornithologists briefed her on various resident and migratory bird species found in the region. She expressed delight on spotting several rare migratory birds, including Bar-headed Geese, Greylag Geese, Dalmatian Pelicans, Common Cranes, Brahminy Ducks, and Ruff and Reeve, which migrate to the sanctuary from regions such as Siberia, Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and China during the winter season.
As part of the “One Tree in Mother’s Name” campaign, Governor Patel also planted a Kadamb sapling within the sanctuary premises, reaffirming her commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

She was warmly welcomed by officials of the Forest Department, including Deputy Conservator of Forests Dr Sakkira Begum, along with local villagers and staff members of the sanctuary.
Notably, Thol Bird Sanctuary received international recognition as a Ramsar Site in 2021 for its ecological significance. Surrounded by a lake, marshlands and lush green shrubs, the wetland becomes a haven for more than 118 species of birds during the winter months, serving as a vital refuge for migratory species and a model for biodiversity conservation efforts in the country.
