Open-Heart Surgery During CPR Saves Woman’s Life at Max Hospital Lucknow

Lucknow  – In a rare and highly complex emergency open-heart surgery, doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow, successfully saved the life of 46-year-old Nazma Bano from Fatehpur. She was brought to the hospital on the morning of May 30th in a critical condition: a cardiac device had become dislodged, a blood vessel in her heart had ruptured, and her blood pressure was immeasurable.

Nazma Bano had a congenital heart condition known as Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), a hole between the two upper chambers of the heart. On May 29th, she underwent a device closure procedure in Prayagraj. However, the device dislodged and became lodged near a heart valve. During attempts to remove it, a heart vessel (left atrial appendage) ruptured, leading to a dangerous accumulation of blood around her heart and a rapid deterioration of her already fragile condition.

Critical Transfer and Emergency Measures

Due to the lack of surgical facilities at the local hospital, Dr. Vishal Srivastava, Associate Director of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Max Hospital, Lucknow, was immediately contacted. He promptly advised a temporary drainage procedure and autologous blood transfusion to stabilize the patient, ensuring she could be safely transported to Lucknow.

Dr. Vishal Srivastava recounted the harrowing experience: “When Nazma arrived at the emergency department around 3:30 AM, she was conscious but in shock, with immeasurable blood pressure. Within minutes, she suffered a cardiac arrest. CPR was immediately initiated, but there was no response. Our emergency and surgical teams were already on high alert. The patient was rushed to the operating theater, where, with continuous CPR, her chest was opened, and direct cardiac massage was commenced along with other necessary life-support measures.”

Successful Open-Heart Intervention

Given the extreme gravity of the situation, Dr. Srivastava and his team made the immediate decision to proceed with an open-heart surgery. This intricate procedure first involved removing the dislodged device, followed by tissue repair and the closure of the original hole in her heart.

“The surgery lasted approximately four hours,” Dr. Srivastava explained. “Following the procedure, Nazma was transferred to the ICU and kept under constant monitoring. Her condition improved within a few days, and she was discharged in a completely healthy state just one week after the surgery. Today, she is living a normal life.”

This case not only underscores the crucial importance of timely surgical intervention but also demonstrates the Max Hospital, Lucknow expert team’s readiness to save lives even in the most severe and challenging circumstances.
