U.S. State Department: “Prime Minister Modi Has Our Full Support,” Says Spokesperson Tammy Bruce Following Pahalgam Terror Attack

Washington, D.C. – In the wake of the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 civilians dead, including tourists, U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce reaffirmed the United States’ unequivocal support for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Bruce stated that the Trump administration remains in close and continued contact with both India and Pakistan amid rising regional tensions.

“The United States stands strong with India against terrorism, and Prime Minister Modi has our full support,” Bruce declared, echoing sentiments recently shared by President Donald Trump during his conversation with PM Modi.

She confirmed that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had spoken with both Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Thursday. The discussions focused on promoting de-escalation and maintaining regional stability in South Asia.

“We’re keeping a careful eye on everything. The Secretary urged both nations to strive towards a sensible resolution in the interest of long-term peace,” Bruce added.

When asked about the effectiveness of U.S. de-escalation calls, Bruce emphasized ongoing diplomatic efforts but declined to disclose further details, saying, “We are asking for a responsible resolution from both parties. Beyond that, I cannot provide additional information at this point.”

The U.S. statement comes amid heightened security concerns in the Kashmir Valley following the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, widely attributed to Pakistan-sponsored terrorists. The assault led to a surge in ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC), prompting a firm military response from India.

Indian forces reportedly retaliated swiftly to ceasefire breaches by the Pakistan Army in the Kupwara and Poonch sectors during the nights of April 26 and 27. According to Indian defense officials, the Army has been given complete operational freedom to respond to future provocations.

In a strong diplomatic response, New Delhi has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and shut down the Integrated Check Post at Attari. Furthermore, India has announced a downgrading of diplomatic ties with Pakistan by limiting the authority of the High Commissions.

Security has also been ramped up across the Kashmir Valley, with anti-terror operations being intensified following the Pahalgam incident.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has reiterated its commitment to partnering with India in counter-terrorism efforts and is urging both nations to prioritize stability and peace.

We will continue to work closely with both governments, but let me be clear—America stands with India during this challenging time,” Bruce concluded.
