Tragedy Strikes Nightclub in North Macedonia: 51 Dead, Over 100 Injured in Fire Triggered by Pyrotechnics

KOCANI, NORTH MACEDONIA –  A devastating fire swept through a packed nightclub in the southern Macedonian town of Kocani in the early hours of Sunday, claiming 51 lives and leaving over 100 others injured, authorities confirmed.

The fire erupted around 2:35 a.m. local time during a live concert by a local pop band, according to Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski, who briefed reporters at a press conference later in the day.

Pyrotechnics Blamed for Igniting Blaze

Initial investigations suggest the blaze was sparked by pyrotechnic devices used during the performance, which ignited the club’s roof. Footage circulating on social media captured the moment chaos unfolded inside the crowded venue as flames spread rapidly, sending concertgoers scrambling for safety.

Toshkovski noted that the venue was filled with young patrons, many of whom were celebrating the weekend. Emergency responders were quick to arrive at the scene, but the intensity of the fire made rescue efforts difficult.

Mass Casualties and Arrest Made

Hospitals in Kocani and nearby regions are overwhelmed with injured victims, some of whom are in critical condition. Families gathered outside hospitals and city buildings, pleading for information about their loved ones.

Police have taken one person into custody in connection with the incident, although details about the individual’s role in the tragedy have not yet been disclosed.

National Mourning Expected

Local officials have signaled that a national day of mourning may be declared as the country grapples with one of its deadliest peacetime disasters. Investigators are continuing to assess whether the club complied with fire safety regulations, and whether emergency exits were accessible during the chaos.

This incident is likely to prompt a review of safety standards in entertainment venues across North Macedonia, especially concerning the use of pyrotechnics indoors.

More updates are expected as authorities continue to investigate the cause and circumstances surrounding the fire.
