BCCI Calls Special General Meeting on March 1

Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has scheduled a Special General Meeting (SGM) in Mumbai on March 1, 2025, to appoint a new joint secretary. The position fell vacant after Devjit Saikia was elevated to the board’s secretary following Jay Shah’s ascension to the role of International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman on December 1, 2024.

The BCCI has officially notified state associations about the SGM, which has a single-item agenda.

“Notice is hereby given for a Special General Meeting (hereinafter referred to as SGM) of the BCCI which will be held at 12:00 PM IST on March 1, 2025, at BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, to transact the business of Election and Induction of the Joint Secretary of BCCI,” the apex cricketing body stated in its communication.

Front-Runners for the Post

Several names have emerged as potential candidates for the vacant post. Among them are:

  • Avishek Dalmiya, former president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) (East Zone)
  • Rohan Jaitley, chief of the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) (North Zone)
  • Sanjay Naik, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) representative (West Zone)

Given recent trends in BCCI appointments, no election is expected to be held for the joint secretary’s post, and the final decision is likely to be a consensus-based appointment.

BCCI’s Compliance with Procedural Norms

The convening of the SGM adheres to BCCI’s rule requiring a 21-day notice period for such meetings. This will mark the second SGM within two months, the previous one being on January 12, 2025, where Devjit Saikia and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia were elected unopposed as secretary and treasurer, respectively.

Role of the Joint Secretary

The joint secretary plays a crucial role in managing the administrative functions of the board and works closely with other key office-bearers to ensure the smooth operation of Indian cricket’s governing body.

With the meeting set for March 1, all eyes will be on Mumbai as the BCCI continues to shape its leadership team following major transitions at the top level.
