Varanasi: Preparations for the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign have gathered momentum in Varanasi, where around 800 women associated with self-help groups are working to make nearly three lakh national flags ahead of Independence Day.
The initiative aims to ensure that the Tricolour reaches households across all 694 gram panchayats in the district, while also supplying flags to the Basic Education Department and the District Youth Welfare Department. Besides spreading the message of patriotism, the campaign is expected to provide employment and generate an estimated income of Rs 6–9 lakh for women associated with the self-help groups.
Varanasi has eight development blocks comprising 694 gram panchayats. Under the distribution plan, around 2.70 lakh flags are proposed to be supplied to the gram panchayats, 25,000 to the Basic Education Department and 5,000 to the District Youth Welfare Department.
Patriotism Meets Women’s Economic Empowerment
Chief Development Officer Prakhar Kumar Singh said women associated with self-help groups are making the national flags from their homes. The initiative is giving them an opportunity to earn an income while strengthening their economic independence.
He said the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign would not only reinforce patriotic sentiments around Independence Day but also contribute to women’s empowerment and the rural economy. Each flag made by the women, he added, would represent not just respect for the nation but also the skill, hard work and growing self-reliance of Kashi’s women.
Deputy Commissioner, Self Employment, Pawan Kumar Singh said the flags are being manufactured in accordance with the prescribed standards. He said the Tricolours made in Kashi and distributed to households would carry the message of patriotism across the district during the Independence Day celebrations.

Women Give a Personal Touch to the Campaign
For many of the women involved, the initiative goes beyond earning an income.
Neha, a member of the Pita Parmeshwar Self-Help Group in Arjunpur village of Sevapuri block, said the women work together while singing and listening to ‘Vande Mataram’. She said the atmosphere at the workplace remains filled with patriotic spirit and that making the Tricolour is not merely a livelihood opportunity but also a way of expressing pride and respect for the country.
Soni, associated with the Kiran SHG in Kesharipur village of Kashi Vidyapeeth block, said women like her are able to earn an income while working from home. She said the women of Kashi are contributing through their hard work to the vision of self-reliance and the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign.
Khushboo and Mamta, members of Suraj Self-Help Group from Thatherimanpur village, said the campaign is both a symbol of patriotism and an avenue for women’s economic empowerment.
As Independence Day approaches, the Tricolour-making initiative in Varanasi is turning the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign into a story of both national pride and grassroots women-led enterprise.
