Mau/Ghazipur: Mafia leader Mukhtar Ansari, who ruled the world of crime for more than three decades, also had a major say in the politics of Purvanchal.
Mukhtar (Mukhtar Ansari), former MLA of Sadar Assembly in Mau district, died of a heart attack in the government hospital of Banda. Mafia, resident of Yusufpur Mohammadabad, Ghazipur, was detained in Banda jail for the last three years. After the death of Ansari, alert has been declared in his political constituency Mau and home district Ghazipur as a precautionary measure. Mukhtar’s last rites will be performed today at his ancestral cremation ground in Yusufpur Mohammadabad.
Mukhtar Ansari’s grandfather Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari, who was once close to Mahatma Gandhi, was also the national president of Congress, while Mukhtar’s maternal grandfather Brigadier Usman was a Mahavir Chakra winner. Mukhtar Ansari’s father was also one of the great leftist leaders of his time.
Mukhtar Ansari, who became the king of Purvanchal politics with his domineering image, became the leader of the gangster world after the kidnapping and murder of VHP international treasurer Nandkishore Rungta. Mukhtar Ansari was considered a very domineering youth since his student days.
Born on 30 June 1963 in Mohammadabad, Ghazipur district, to Subhanullah Ansari and Begum Rabia, Mukhtar Ansari was the youngest of three brothers. The world came to know about Mukhtar Ansari’s domineering descent into criminal life when he decided to contest elections to fulfill his political ambitions.
Then he needed money, to fulfill which, in a planned manner in January 1997, Mukhtar Ansari kidnapped Nand Kishore Rungta, who was then the National Treasurer of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, from his residence. In order to release him, three crore rupees were demanded as ransom, which was a huge amount at that time.
It is said that even after receiving the money, Nandkishore Rungta was killed and his body disappeared, which has not been recovered till date. After this incident, Mukhtar Ansari emerged as a new pillar of the crime world.

After that Mukhtar Ansari became MLA by contesting elections from Mau, who continued winning the MLA elections continuously. During this time, Mukhtar Ansari also contested the Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi parliamentary constituency against senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mohan Murali Manohar Joshi, but was defeated by a very less number of votes. During this period, Mukhtar Ansari had become the king of the mafia world in the entire Purvanchal.
From coal business to government contracts, no work was possible without the permission of Mukhtar Ansari. Even in Mau district, Mukhtar Ansari continued to look after the distribution of PWD and other government contracts. The empire in the criminal world continued to grow and the number of criminal incidents also continued to increase. More than a dozen murders took place in which Mukhtar Ansari’s name came up directly or indirectly.
During the riots in Mau in 2005, the video of Mukhtar waving over the open gypsy and his appeal seemed to create a different atmosphere. In 2005 itself, Krishnanand Rai, the then MLA from Mohammadabad assembly constituency of Ghazipur, was shot dead along with his seven colleagues.
More than 400 rounds of bullets were fired in this massacre. Seen this way, Mukhtar, a young man with a domineering image, had become the king of the criminal world. Not only this, due to his arrangements he had also become the owner of half a dozen assembly seats in Purvanchal. Where he once became an MLA under the banner of BSP and SP. Many times even independents won the elections.

During this period, Mukhtar Ansari also formed small parties like Hindu Muslim Ekta Dal, Qaumi Ekta Dal. Mafia Mukhtar Ansari is believed to have direct or partial influence on about 7-8 Lok Sabha and about 35-40 Assembly seats in Purvanchal of Uttar Pradesh. Once Mukhtar Ansari was famous in Varanasi, Ghazipur, Ballia, Jaunpur and Mau of Purvanchal.
Mukhtar Ansari and his clan are believed to be dominant in these districts. This was the reason why sometimes SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and sometimes BSP chief Mayawati adopted Mukhtar. Mayawati had even called Mukhtar Ansari the messiah of the poor.
In the nineties, gang wars started in Ghazipur Mau, Ballia, Varanasi and Jaunpur over government contracts. During this period, the most popular name in these districts was Mukhtar Ansari. Mukhtar Ansari became MLA from Mau Sadar from BSP for the first time in 1996 and never looked back. Mukhtar made Mau his stronghold and remained MLA from here for five consecutive terms till 2022. In 2002, after not getting a ticket from BSP, Mukhtar Ansari decided to contest the elections as an independent from Mau Sadar and won. After that, he formed his own party and contested the elections in the name of Qaumi Ekta Dal and won twice in a row. achieved.

Whose name was once spoken in dozens of districts of Purvanchal, today people are reluctant to associate his name with theirs. People say that in the eighties and nineties, the mafia in whose name Mukhtar Ansari used to open government contracts used to make illegal extortions. Once people used to consider it an honor to be close to him, today people are shying away from associating the name of that mafia Mukhtar Ansari with their name. Mukhtar’s influence, which started in the 90s, started collapsing by 2017.
The situation is such that in the campaign being run against the crimes of the Yogi government, by 2024, the property worth about Rs 500 crore of Mafia Mukhtar has either been confiscated or bulldozers have been run on it.
