Varanasi: The scholars of Panchang and Astrology of Kashi have come together on one platform on the differences that have been coming up for the last few years regarding festivals. During a press conference held in Sanskrit Vidya Dharma Vigyan Faculty of BHU, the scholars of Kashi announced that the festival of Diwali will be celebrated on 31st October in the whole country.

They said that the confusion has arisen due to not studying the texts of Dharmashastrat by establishing a relation between them. They also gave reasons as per Dharmashastrat for the decision of the date.

Prof. Vinay Kumar Pandey, coordinator of Vishwa Panchang published by BHU, said that according to the scriptures, the presence of Amavasya in the main period Pradosh is considered necessary for the decision of Diwali. This year Amavasya is falling on 31st October in Pradosh (2 hours 24 minutes) and Nishith (midnight), so celebrating Diwali on 31st is in accordance with the scriptures. In no part of the country is Amavasya available in the full Pradosh period on November 1, hence celebrating Diwali on November 1 is not according to the scriptures.

The scholars also told that in 2024 there is no difference in the Panchangs made by traditional mathematics because according to all of them, Amavasya starts before sunset on October 31 and ends before sunset on November 1. Due to this, it is proved unanimously that Diwali will be celebrated on October 31 according to the Panchangs made on traditional principles in all parts of the country.

According to the Panchangs made by visual mathematics, in some parts of the country, Amavasya starts before sunset on October 31 and ends before one Ghati after sunset on November 1, due to which there is no difference regarding Diwali in those areas as per the Shastra method. There too, Diwali is being proved undisputedly on October 31.
