Isabella Thoburn College Celebrates College Day with Charley’s Aunt

Lucknow: Isabella Thoburn College held its annual College Day on 31 October 2026, with a staging of the English play Charley’s Aunt. The chief guest was Dr. Anil Kumar Rastogi, who was awarded the Padma Shri this year. A well-known Lucknow theatre artist and actor, Dr. Rastogi is also a former senior scientist and an active social worker. His contributions to the performing arts, scientific research and community service have earned him wide recognition.

The programme began with a Mangalacharan by the college choir, which set a dignified and festive tone for the evening. Dr. E. S. Charles, President of the college, then formally welcomed the guests and the chief guest.

Acting Principal Dr. (Major) Neerja Masih presented the annual report, highlighting the achievements of students and faculty in academics and co-curricular activities.

In his address, Dr. Rastogi remembered the college’s distinguished alumnae Bina Rai, Ismat Chughtai and Qurratulain Hyder. He said that the special activities of IT College are what set it apart from other institutions. On theatre, he said it gives you strength, a chance to express yourself, and teaches you to work with others, which helps build personality.

The highlight of the evening was Charley’s Aunt, performed by the college students under the direction of Dr. Shirley Jain, with support from faculty members. Written by the British playwright Brandon Thomas, this well-loved farce is known for its humorous situations, romantic entanglements and mistaken identities. The story follows two university students who plan to meet their sweethearts. Things take an unexpected turn when a friend disguises himself as Charley’s wealthy aunt from Brazil, setting off a chain of comic misunderstandings and entertaining muddles.

The students brought the characters to life with spirited acting. The audience laughed throughout and applauded often, making the play a memorable part of the celebrations.

The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. (Mrs.) E. S. Charles, President of the college, followed by the collective singing of the national anthem.
