‘Sukoon Nilaya’ Becomes a Pillar of Support for Critically Ill Patients and Their Families

‘Sukoon Nilaya’ Brings Relief from Pain, Support for Families and Dignity to Life
Mumbai (Anil Bedag): Patients battling serious illnesses need more than just medication. They also need compassion, emotional support and a sense of belonging. Guided by this humane approach, Mumbai’s ‘Sukoon Nilaya’ is bringing hope and relief to adults and children living with cancer and other serious, life-limiting illnesses affecting the nervous system, lungs, kidneys and liver.
Operated by the King George V Memorial Trust, the centre began in 2021 as a modest initiative with 12 beds. Today, it has grown into a 35-bed facility where all services are provided free of charge. Patients receive medical care, physiotherapy, counselling and support to manage pain and other distressing symptoms.
Speaking at an event organised to mark World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2026, Dr. Eric Borges, Chairman of the Trust, said, “Our aim is to equip families with the necessary information, skills and support so that they can continue providing appropriate care to patients at home.”
What sets ‘Sukoon Nilaya’ apart is its focus on the needs of patients as well as their family members. Caregivers are trained to look after patients at home, while follow-up support is provided through phone and video consultations.
At a time when the need for palliative care remains significant across Maharashtra, this initiative highlights an important message: healthcare is not just about fighting a disease, but also about ensuring that patients receive dignity, relief from suffering and emotional support throughout their journey.
